Summary

It is known as the Discworld。 It is a flat planet, supported on the backs of four elephants, who in turn stand on the back of the great turtle A'Tuin as it swims majestically through space。 And it is quite possibly the funniest place in all of creation。

The last thing the wizard Drum Billet did, before Death laid a bony hand on his shoulder, was to pass on his staff of power to the eighth son of an eighth son。 Unfortunately for his colleagues in the chauvinistic (not to say misogynistic) world of magic, he failed to check on the new-born baby's sex。。。

Terry Pratchett turns his acute satirical eye on sexual equality and chauvanism in his hilarious third Discworld novel。

Це як читати фільм。 Важко зупинитися, дотепно, просто, але і не без глибоких думок。 Люблю героїв Прачетта за їх недовершеність та справжність。

At least as much fun as the first two with a bit more social commentary to boot。

I did not find this book has the same wit as book 1 or 2, with a somewhat slow buildup of a storyline。

Really really delightful and fun。

I have read books in Pratchett's Discworld series before but the two first wasn't nearly as good as later books so going into book 3 I head a bit hesitant but I really shouldn't have。 This book was a delight to read。 I sat in my favourite armchair chuckling to myself for most of it。 The characters was really good and the topic while very on the nose (he really was not subtle here) it was well done and it's still very much relevant to today。 These books really have a timeless quality to them。 I have read books in Pratchett's Discworld series before but the two first wasn't nearly as good as later books so going into book 3 I head a bit hesitant but I really shouldn't have。 This book was a delight to read。 I sat in my favourite armchair chuckling to myself for most of it。 The characters was really good and the topic while very on the nose (he really was not subtle here) it was well done and it's still very much relevant to today。 These books really have a timeless quality to them。 。。。more

4。5。 Surprisingly restrained relative to the off the wall goofiness of The Light Fantastic, but with that comical restraint comes a more focused look at thematic elements - gender politics, namely, and it lends the book a much cleaner narrative。 We're nearly at Pratchett writing a straightforward fantasy in how seriously we're meant to take things。。。。 but have no fear, the writing itself is still an absolute riot。 Really killer combination。 4。5。 Surprisingly restrained relative to the off the wall goofiness of The Light Fantastic, but with that comical restraint comes a more focused look at thematic elements - gender politics, namely, and it lends the book a much cleaner narrative。 We're nearly at Pratchett writing a straightforward fantasy in how seriously we're meant to take things。。。。 but have no fear, the writing itself is still an absolute riot。 Really killer combination。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book, and as usually Terry Pratchett’s prose is just fun to read。 However, it probably was the wrong book to read immediately after The Wee Free Men。 In many ways it feels like the spiritual successor to TWFM and the writing style/plot isn’t as enjoyable。 I think I will finish the Tiffany Aching books before returning to the rest of the witches arc。

I’d forgotten how lovely Equal Rites is, although it becomes a little too fantastical and hard for me to follow at the end, this is to be expected from a Discworld novel。 Nonetheless it’s still 5/5 for the satire, Terry navigates sexism without being preachy or overt, and to think this was written in 1987! It has a lovely overall warmth throughout, with Granny Weatherwax being set up as a character we will come to know, love and ultimately cry about。 The development of Esk’s character is brillia I’d forgotten how lovely Equal Rites is, although it becomes a little too fantastical and hard for me to follow at the end, this is to be expected from a Discworld novel。 Nonetheless it’s still 5/5 for the satire, Terry navigates sexism without being preachy or overt, and to think this was written in 1987! It has a lovely overall warmth throughout, with Granny Weatherwax being set up as a character we will come to know, love and ultimately cry about。 The development of Esk’s character is brilliant, so much so I can’t believe this wasn’t one of the early TV adaptations and it’s a shame she isn’t a major character in any subsequent novels。 I read all the Witches novels as a young teen and didn’t particularly enjoy them, however rereading Equal Rites has definitely given me the appetite for the rest。 As with most Pratchett, I’ve realised there is so much to be found in each book at different times of my life and I’m always excited to revisit! Overall it’s a wonderful story which requires no knowledge of any other Discworld lore。 Therefore I’d recommend it as a great gateway novel to anyone who is looking to understand what all the bloody fuss is about。 。。。more

En orden cronológico, el primero de Pratchett que me gusta mucho de verdad, con una trama más sólida que los dos primeros。

A fun and witty handling of an issue that would have been all too easy to botch。 As an author Pratchett really does have that special ability to write books which while not all that profound or necessarily remarkable are nonetheless the kind that you blink and you’ve read a bunch of them in rapid succession。 As a final note subvocalisation really is a must to enjoy this and Pratchett's other works its well worth the extra time。 A fun and witty handling of an issue that would have been all too easy to botch。 As an author Pratchett really does have that special ability to write books which while not all that profound or necessarily remarkable are nonetheless the kind that you blink and you’ve read a bunch of them in rapid succession。 As a final note subvocalisation really is a must to enjoy this and Pratchett's other works its well worth the extra time。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Thoroughly enjoyed the discourse into Witchcraft within Discworld。 I recall the last few battle scenes in the previous book being one with multiple dimensions, and having the entire scale of the world going really crazy。 But this book, in its single chapter simplicity, was really a nicely paced book through and through。 I never knew when to stop reading, only that I should have stopped reading at the paragraph before。 No regrets, just a lot of double checking that I indeed had read the phonetica Thoroughly enjoyed the discourse into Witchcraft within Discworld。 I recall the last few battle scenes in the previous book being one with multiple dimensions, and having the entire scale of the world going really crazy。 But this book, in its single chapter simplicity, was really a nicely paced book through and through。 I never knew when to stop reading, only that I should have stopped reading at the paragraph before。 No regrets, just a lot of double checking that I indeed had read the phonetically spelled word, or spell。 I liked it so much that I ordered Mort immediately after。 Now I’m looking forward to reading that! 。。。more

I first read these as a teenager and this is the first of my beloved ‘witches’ books, I am very biased as Granny Weatherwax is my favourite just behind Death but only a smidgeon。 The plot is hilarious but also Pratchetts cometary on equality , feminism and the patriarchy, I love his writing so much and every book is so clever, he teaches while making you laugh, is never condescending or preachy。 Esk is meant to be the heir, but Esk is a girl which means she can't be a wizard。 Wizarding is a for I first read these as a teenager and this is the first of my beloved ‘witches’ books, I am very biased as Granny Weatherwax is my favourite just behind Death but only a smidgeon。 The plot is hilarious but also Pratchetts cometary on equality , feminism and the patriarchy, I love his writing so much and every book is so clever, he teaches while making you laugh, is never condescending or preachy。 Esk is meant to be the heir, but Esk is a girl which means she can't be a wizard。 Wizarding is a for men and women have to be witches。 So my beloved Granny Weatherwax takes on the education of Esk with much hilarity。 These are great books which I thoroughly recommend to everyone (regularly)Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion 。。。more

Hugely entertaining and funny story about a wizard/witch。

It's the first book of the Witches sub-series of the Discworld novels。 It's basically a prologue to all the other Witch novels, including the Tiffany Aching series。 The title of the book is a pun at "Equal Rights" - yes, I know you knew that。 The story of the book is about a young girl who wants to join the all male Unseen University to become the first female wizard。 Sounds trope-y, but it's the way Sir Terry spins this yarn and sets the scene for all the Witch novels to come that makes this a It's the first book of the Witches sub-series of the Discworld novels。 It's basically a prologue to all the other Witch novels, including the Tiffany Aching series。 The title of the book is a pun at "Equal Rights" - yes, I know you knew that。 The story of the book is about a young girl who wants to join the all male Unseen University to become the first female wizard。 Sounds trope-y, but it's the way Sir Terry spins this yarn and sets the scene for all the Witch novels to come that makes this a classic。 If you are new to the Discworld: What are you waiting for?

Pratchett hit the ground running with the Discworld series。 In the third book, I feel he really hits his stride, achieves take off, etc。 The characters are strong and the book sees the introduction of concepts and characters that become fast friends for readers as the series keeps growing。

Fun and enjoyable with a good smattering of laughs throughout。 Stranger than books one and two but builds on the world。
